eastern sun dance company
The Eastern Sun Dance Company was founded in 2007 and is Artistically Directed by Andalee. It’s members are made up of Dancers from around California’s Central Valley. As a performing professional dance company the Eastern Sun has had the opportunity to travel around California and dance for audiences at Belly Dance Festivals, Cultural Events, Dance Showcases, private events, and special charity events such as the Rely for Life.
Not fully committed to any one style of Middle Eastern Dance or “Belly Dance” it is the goal of Eastern Sun to share with it’s audiences the ‘authentic’ side of Belly Dance (with representations of Folkloric types of Middle Eastern Dance) and also the side of the art that encourages a deeper exploration of creativity and expression. Using that creativity the Eastern Sun Dance Company creates some choreographies based on the fusion of two or more styles of dance.

What is Belly Dance?
“Belly Dance” is an American term to describe a varied, complex, and expressive dance form rooted in cultures from the Middle East and North America. In Arabic Belly Dance is usually referred to as “Raqs Sharqi” which translates to “Eastern Dance” and sometimes as “Oriental” which means “Eastern” in Western languages. In Turkish it is generally referred to as "Dans Oryantal” or “Tanzi Oryantal” which also mean “Eastern Dance”. Although Belly Dance has roots in Middle Eastern and North African folkloric styles of dance, it is considered a separate art form, and just like there are regional differences in folk styles of dance, there are regional differences in styles of Belly Dance. In America we can find some Belly Dance styles that are completely different from those in the countries of origin and have evolved as American art forms.
Andalee’s classes are taught to ensure a strong foundation in basic technique with emphasis on posture, isolation technique, and expression with a leaning towards Modern American Cabaret and Egyptian Raqs Sharqi styles. Students can also expect to learn about history, music, cultural context, costuming, and other fun tidbits about Raqs Sharqi and Andalee’s 18 years experience in the art form and her travels.
